Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

The Sunset Cliffs Natural Park  is the best way to experience a sunrise or a sunset view. Especially in the fall and winter time when the sun is at a different angle. The dramatic and unique cliff formations date back millions of years ago. So far back that there are fossils on display at the San Diego Natural History Museum! Below we will explore what you can do, when to go and what the sunset cliffs actually are.

What is the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park?

People gather to walk and sit to watch the sunset on the cliffs.

The Sunset Cliffs are sandstone cliffs that have long arches, sea caves and tide pools, similar to the ones in Malibu. However, visiting the beach and the caves can only be done when tides are low- always check the tide chart here. The cliffs stretch for about 2 miles with many locals and tourists going for long walks along the coast.

The waves crash onto the cliffs. Views of the sky and palm trees are as well.

The Pacific Ocean can be seen from the cliffs with beach access to Garbage beach (weird name, I know) also known as Rope Beach. I’m assuming the name, ‘Rope Beach’ was given because there’s a rope at the bottom to help beach goers get down to the beach.

If you decide to go down to the beach, keep in mind that there is no lifeguard at the Garbage beach. Be very careful if you decide to go for a swim and be cautious as it can be very dangerous.

When To Visit the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park?

The best time to visit is during low tide, when tide pools are exposed. However, if you just want to walk on the cliffs than anytime works. Especially during sunset hours when the sun and ocean meet. The cliffs are scenic and a photogenic location for photographers looking to shoot nature.

Final Thoughts

The Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a must see. I wanted to getaway and thought, well this is a fun weekend trip from LA. The cliffs are a unique place to see the various topography SoCal has to offer. If you decide to go, don’t go on a weekend because there will be a lot of tourists and locals. Unless you don’t mind, I would suggest visiting on a weekday if possible.
