The Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the best way to experience a sunrise or a sunset view. Especially in the fall and winter time when the sun is at a different angle. The dramatic and unique cliff formations date back millions of years ago. So far back that there are fossils on display at the San Diego Natural History Museum! Below we will explore what you can do, when to go and what the sunset cliffs actually are.
What is the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park?

The Sunset Cliffs are sandstone cliffs that have long arches, sea caves and tide pools, similar to the ones in Malibu. However, visiting the beach and the caves can only be done when tides are low- always check the tide chart here. The cliffs stretch for about 2 miles with many locals and tourists going for long walks along the coast.

The Pacific Ocean can be seen from the cliffs with beach access to Garbage beach (weird name, I know) also known as Rope Beach. I’m assuming the name, ‘Rope Beach’ was given because there’s a rope at the bottom to help beach goers get down to the beach.

If you decide to go down to the beach, keep in mind that there is no lifeguard at the Garbage beach. Be very careful if you decide to go for a swim and be cautious as it can be very dangerous.
Where is Sunset Cliffs Natural Park?

Located in the neighborhood of Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs Natural park is located south of Ocean Beach Pier and along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. If you type in your GPS Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, then it’ll take you to the exact location. You’re going to see a sign with the name of the park on a dirt space on the cliff.

You’ll know you’re near the cliffs when you see the Inn at Sunset Cliffs Hotel. To help you get to the park, just GPS the hotel and you’ll find the sunset cliffs at the end of the street.
Address to the Inn at Sunset Cliffs Hotel: 1370 Sunset Cliffs Blvd, San Diego, CA 92107
When To Visit the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park?

The best time to visit is during low tide, when tide pools are exposed. However, if you just want to walk on the cliffs than anytime works. Especially during sunset hours when the sun and ocean meet. The cliffs are scenic and a photogenic location for photographers looking to shoot nature.

Tours of the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

If you don’t want to worry about parking and just want to have a fun time then head over to the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park on a tour van! This tour is 1.5-2 hours long with 8 passengers and a driver who’s also your guide. It’s a great way to enjoy the cliffs and have everything taken care of.
The tour has three stops, the San Diego Bay, Ocean Beach and it ends at the Sunset Cliffs for sunset. You will also drive by Coronado Island while on the tour. It’s a convertible van, therefore prepare to bring a sweater if visiting in the winter.

Final Thoughts

The Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a must see. I wanted to getaway and thought, well this is a fun weekend trip from LA. The cliffs are a unique place to see the various topography SoCal has to offer. Sunset Cliffs is such a good name, considering how those rocks looks so fabulous and golden as the sun is setting. What a gorgeous area!!
p.s. Garbage beach sounds a bit wrong when the beach is so pretty!? Maybe it used to have lots of rubbish, but it improved!?
