As a native I always took it for granted, but now I appreciate this iconic landmark known as the Hollywood sign.

How did the Hollywood Sign Originate?

The Hollywood sign was created in 1923 to promote a new housing development in LA. At the time, the Hollywood sign’s name was longer and said Hollywoodland. Harry Chandler was the visionary behind the 45 ft. tall letters across Mount Lee. The sign was illuminated in the early stages of its existence with large lights; 4,000 to be exact.

Hollywood Sign Viewpoints Without Hiking

Hollywood Reservoir

The Hollywood Reservoir is a great place to see the Hollywood sign if you’re trying to avoid hiking. You will see the Hollywood sign as you’re getting your steps in. Most locals come here to go for runs and/or bike rides. I suggest getting here early to take advantage of the free parking lot and to avoid the locals and tourists.

Ovation Hollywood (formerly known as Hollywood + Highland Center) 

Ovation Hollywood is a large outdoor mall in LA where you can see the Hollywood Sign if you’re out shopping or if you’d like to see it without the need of going for a hike. All you need to do is head to the crossing bridge on the third floor of Ovation and you’ll see the recognizable sign on Mount Lee.

The weekends receive the most visitors, consider your visit to Ovation on a weekday to avoid the tourists and crowds.

Parks With Views of the Hollywood Sign

Barnsdall Art Park 

Located in East Hollywood, Barnsdall Art Park is a hidden gem making it one of the best Hollywood sign viewpoints. Whilst at a distance, there’s a clear and uninterrupted view of the sign. This local park is frequented by neighborhood residents, therefore a nice getaway from all the tourists. The best views are during sunset as the sun reflects on the letters of the Hollywood sign.

Lake Hollywood Park 

Lake Hollywood Park offers (in my opinion) the best Hollywood sign viewpoints without the need to hike. The park sits perfectly in front of the sign with the promise of some of the best photos! Get there early on a weekday to avoid crowds. Bring your favorite snacks, a blanket and your friends. My pro-tip is to enter through the North gate.

Overlooks With Views of the Hollywood Sign

Jerome C. Daniel Overlook

In preparation of the Olympics hosted in LA in 1984, the Jerome C. Daniel Overlook was made. It’s perched on one of the most well known streets of Los Angeles, Mulholland Drive. The overlook is also known as the Hollywood Bowl Overlook to help you better locate the location. What differentiates this overlook to the others is the telescopes it has to help you better see the Hollywood sign. Dogs are allowed so make sure you don’t leave your furry friend behind!

Griffith Observatory  

If you’re visiting LA and you don’t have much time, consider then this makes a great Hollywood sign viewpoint. The Griffith Observatory is a great place to see two iconic attractions, you’ll be able to see Santa Monica to the southwest and the Hollywood sign from the terrace! Remember to visit during the day because there are no lights illuminating the sign at night. I suggest going as soon as they open or during sunset hour to get uninterrupted views.

North Beachwood Dr

This 2-mile street is ideal for you if you want to stay in your car and just admire this LA landmark from afar. Drive down to the best Hollywood sign viewpoint on the intersection of North Beachwood Drive and Glen Holly!

Canyon Lake Dr

This street leads you to views of the Hollywood sign. It does get congested since there’s only one lane for each direction of the street. Make sure your passengers are ready to take that snapshot since there is no way to stop.

Hiking Trails to the Hollywood Sign

Hollyridge Trail 

The Hollyridge trail is a 5-mile hike and will take about 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete. It’s an uphill hike for the first hour then goes flat for the remainder of the hike. This is the most difficult trail to see the Hollywood Sign. However, views make it worth it; you’ll be able to see as far as Malibu to the west. 

Wonder View Trail 

This trail begins at the end of Wonder View Dr and it’s only a 3-mile hike round trip. This hike is roughly 3-hours round trip. Once you have started the hike at the end of the road, there will be a gate that you’re going to go around and then pass the electrical tower to the right. You will then see the narrow hiking path. 

Hike up to the wisdom tree (only tree to survive the fires in 2007). Continue to hike Mt. Lee and follow the path to the right. Once at the top, you will end up at the back of the fenced Hollywood sign accompanied by scenic views.

Burbank Peak Trail 

The Burbank Peak trail is 1 mile long and will take about 1-hour to complete. Unquestionably the shortest trail although, not the easiest. The rocky terrain is difficult if you’re not used to hiking. Parking is limited therefore, make this a sunrise hike to ensure parking. The trail starts on Wonder View Dr, but you will want to park on Lake Hollywood Dr. to not worry about getting ticketed.

5 Tips for Hiking To The Hollywood Sign

1. Start your hike early to avoid the crowds and the heat

3. Wear a fanny pack or backpack (don’t carry anything- mountains can be steep and you’ll need your hands if you lose your grip)

One of the most unique ways to see the Hollywood Sign up close and from the air is to charter a helicopter. I did this years ago for my birthday and I have to say that it was absolutely incredible. It’s an unforgettable experience with the best instagrammable photos you can get. 

You won’t have to worry about parking or hiking. Personally, my favorite way if money isn’t an issue. The aerial view is expensive, although something worth doing for a birthday or special occasion!

• If you decide to park your car in a residential neighborhood to see the Hollywood sign, please be aware and cautious of where you’re parking. 

• Street signs can be confusing, residents tend to be annoyed by the constant influx of people and there’s been moments where cars are towed. 

• Make sure you fully read the parking signs and do not block driveways.

Tours to the Hollywood Sign 

If you prefer to not deal with parking or hiking then book a ticket on a tour bus! There will be a guide to explain with detail the history of the iconic attraction among other things. All you need to do is bring a camera or your phone (what people use nowadays) and be ready to snap snap snap!
